KLM, Malaysia connect social media pals

KLM and Malaysia Airlines use social media like Facebook to connect people on flights. Chose if, for instance, if you want to sit next to a British guy  to talk about jazz or next to a Norwegian alternative-rock fan.

In her New York Times blog, Nicola Clark writes about the option to  chose “the director of a British answering service, who has a passion for reggae and jazz; an Italian chemical engineer fluent in Dutch, English, Spanish and Portuguese; or a Norwegian alternative-rock fan en route to visit family in Argentina” on a flight from Amsterdam to Sao Paulo.

This would have been through KLM’s Meet and Seat program, where flight bookings can be linked to your Facebook or LinkedIn profile, if you like.

Malaysia Airlines has introduced MHBuddy, where you can check if any of your Facebook friends are on the plane you are about to board. The scheme is reported to be used by 3 000 users a month
